Question 1
Problem Solved

By Alex Mason

1

What do you need to be a successful inventor? Must you have years of special training? Do you need to have a lot of tools? Think again. All you really need is a creative mind and a problem you want to solve. Just ask me. My name is Alex, and the invention I made to solve a problem is used in homes all over the United States.

2

For me the problem was messy food spills. As a fourth grader, I got really tired of cleaning up after my little brother. Tommy liked to run around the house carrying his food bowl. The food would spill out, and I always seemed to be the one who had to clean it up.

3

To solve this problem, I made a spill-proof bowl. I used a small plastic bowl and a large plastic bowl with a cover. First I glued the small plastic bowl inside the large one. Then I cut a hole in the large bowl's cover and placed the cover over the bowls. Together the bowls and the cover made a wide rim that kept food inside.

4

One day I entered my bowl in an invention contest for young people. Many people at the contest thought my spill-proof bowl was a wonderful idea. I think they were all parents of small children, so they knew what my bowl could do. They told me they would buy the bowl if I could sell it in stores. So I started getting in touch with companies. I told them about my invention and asked if they wanted to make and sell it. A year later, a company agreed to manufacture the bowl. My dad and I met with people from the company to work out the final design. I helped plan the package for the bowl too.

5

Now my spill-proof bowl is sold in stores around the country. Four times a year, the company pays me a share of the money it makes for the bowl. I've already earned thousands of dollars! I also have become very fond of my little brother. (But don't tell him that, okay?) After all, he's the one who gave me a messy problem that I just had to solve.
